Seedorf withdraws? Really?

May 13, 2008

Clarence Seedorf has asked to be withdrawn from the Netherlands squad. His reasons weren’t entirely clear. “Since my return to the national team, the right conditions have not been created to let me perform at my best and to effectively excel as the team member I always strive to be,” he said.

It’ll now be tough for the Dutch to put together a strong midfield, since Mark van Bommel has said he won’t play for Marco van Basten.

This is the kind of midfield threat the Netherlands will be missing:

Bilić: World will see Modrić’s value

May 1, 2008

Croatia coach Slaven Bilić - who, incidentally, just signed a two-year contract extension - says the world will see why Tottenham Hotspur just spent €21m on Croatia midfielder Luka Modrić at UEFA. Modrić is a solid midfielder and I’m inclined to back Bilić. Croatia is young but talented and may be able to compete with the European powers this summer.

Rosicky, Diaby injured

April 25, 2008

The Czech Republic and France got bad news from Arsène Wenger, who confirmed that Tomáš Rosický and Abou Diaby will miss the remainder of Arsenal’s season.

Though a healthy Rosický would be a safe bet to make his country’s squad and Diaby a fringe, both players provide depth with experience at multiple positions. Hard news, especially for the Czechs.
